Hookah, also known as shisha or narghile, is a popular smoking tool that has been enjoyed for centuries across many cultures. At present, it has become very popular all over the world in the night clubs, bars, restaurant, coffee shop., etc. Many people also own their personal hookahs.
Installing and using a hookah properly is essential for a safe, enjoyable experience—whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned user. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the entire process, from assembling the components to lighting the charcoal and enjoying your session.
Before you start smoking hookah, to avoid interruptions, you have to make sure all the necessary components all complete. A standard hookah parts setup includes:
– A hookah base (the water-filled container, usually made of glass or plastic)
– Hookah stem (the long metal tube that connects the base to the bowl)
– Hookah bowl (where you place shisha flavor tobacco)
– Charcoal (preferably natural coconut charcoal, which burns cleaner and longer)
– Charcoal holder (to place the lit charcoal on top of the bowl)
– Hose (for inhaling the smoke)
– Grommet/gasket/seal (silicone or rubber, to prevent air leaks)
– Water (room temperature is best—avoid hot or cold water)
– Lighter or charcoal burner (to light the charcoal)
– Tongs (to handle hot charcoal safely)
Fill the base with room-temperature water—this is crucial for filtering the smoke and cooling it down. The water level should cover the bottom of the stem by 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm). If the water is too shallow, the smoke won’t be filtered properly; if it’s too deep, you may inhale water. If the glass base is enough big, you can add some fruits, milk, flashing powder, ice cube to make the smoke more leisure.
Next, attach the stem to the base. Most stems have a rubber gasket at the bottom to create a tight seal—ensure it’s properly placed to prevent air leaks. Push the stem firmly into the base until it fits snugly. Wetting the rubber stopper or using a little bit of dish washing soap before connecting it makes this step easier. If there’s still a gap, you can add an extra gasket or wrap a small piece of tape around the stem (though this is usually unnecessary with a well-fitted gasket).
Using the small rubber insert, attach the hose and connect it to the trumpet of the stem. Again, check for a grommet to ensure a tight seal—twist the hose gently until it’s secure. In order to assure that the hookah is in a good sealing condition status, put your hand to cover the hole of the stem where you put the shisha bowl, then use mouth to suck through the hookah tube, if there is any air leakage then check your connections again. You should feel resistance through this test, bubbles should form in the water. If there’s no resistance, check the gaskets and reattach any loose components. If the hookah has multiple hoses, repeat this step for each one.
Now, prepare the shisha bowl with smoking flavor tobacco. First, check that the bowl has a gasket (usually at the bottom) to seal it to the top of the stem. If not, add one. For silicone bowl generally no need handle this step, put directly and make sure tight is enough. Then, add some shisha tobacco—fluff it up with your fingers or the tobacco fork, some charcoal tong also have function for this. To avoid packing it too tightly (loose packing allows air to flow, which helps the charcoal burn evenly). Fill the bowl with shisha, do not pack the bowl too tight for it will make it harder to inhale and will not allow the tobacco to burn properly.Once the bowl is put in place, some users prefer to place the charcoal screen or aluminum foil to cover the bowl, some silicone bowls have suitable aluminum charcoal holder to tighten on the bowl as well. These steps are aimed to keep the charcoal from falling into the shisha. If using tin foil, tear a small piece large enough to cover the bowl and wrap around tightly over the top, poke 10–15 small holes in the foil with a toothpick, fork, or any other sharp object. This allows heat from the charcoal to reach the shisha without mixing the two. Or use a piece of the precut hookah foils with punched holes (recommended)
Using a lighter or charcoal burner, light the charcoal. If using a burner, place the charcoal on the burner and let it heat up until it’s fully red-hot (this usually takes 5–10 minutes). If using a lighter, hold the flame to the charcoal and rotate it slowly until all sides are glowing red—be careful, as the charcoal will get extremely hot.
Once the charcoal is fully lit, use tongs to pick it up (never touch it with your hands!) and place it on top of the bowl. If you used foil, set the charcoal directly on the foil; if not, place it in the charcoal holder first, then set the holder on the bowl. For a stronger smoke, you can use 2–3 pieces of charcoal, but 1 piece is usually enough for a beginner.
Before taking your first puff, test the hookah to make sure there are no air leaks. Once everything is working properly, take a series of rapid slow, gentle small puffs to get the tobacco burning. The smoke should be cool and smooth, thanks to the water filtration. If the smoke is too harsh, try adding a bit more water to the base or adjusting the number of holes in the foil (more holes = more air = milder smoke). Once smoke starts to build up in the glass base of the hookah and starts to flow easily through the hose, then the charcoal is burning properly.
After using for a while, if a large amount of smoke has accumulated inside the hookah base bottle, you can use a hookah pump to move it. Use the hookah pump is very easily and shortly to remove these smoke.
Have a a pleasant hookah smoke session now!

– Never leave a lit hookah unattended—charcoal can cause fires if it falls off the bowl.
– Keep the hookah away from flammable materials (curtains, paper, furniture) and out of reach of children and pets.
– Use natural charcoal instead of quick-light charcoal, which contains chemicals that can affect the taste and may be harmful.
– After use, let the hookah cool completely before disassembling and cleaning it. Rinse the base, stem, bowl, and hose with warm water to remove any residue—this keeps the hookah clean and prevents mold.
– Do not overpack the shisha or use too much charcoal, as this can lead to overheating and harsh smoke. With these steps, you’ll be able to install and use your hookah safely and enjoyably. Remember, practice makes perfect—don’t worry if your first session isn’t perfect; adjust the water level, shisha packing, or charcoal amount to find what works best for you. Happy smoking!
